Bach: Markus Passion, BWV 247
March 29 @ 19:30 - 22:30
Mystery and grandeur meet in Met’s 2024 presentation of J.S. Bach’s long-lost St. Mark Passion. We know that Bach performed St Mark Passion settings several times in different versions while in Leipzig. The music for the final 1744 performance is lost, but thanks to the recent rediscovery of a libretto booklet and other evidence, Dutch musicologist Robert Koolstra reconstructed the work in 2017. Don’t miss this, the second Canadian performance of Bach and Koolstra’s masterpiece. The Met Festival Choir, with Philippe Gagné as Evangelist and Clarence Frazer as Jesus, Toronto’s leading period-instrument players, conducted by Jonathan Oldengarm. Pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m.; organ prelude at 7:15 p.m.; concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
